Behind the Glow: The Grueling Demands of International Black Light Theatre

+ 11

The mesmerizing world of black light theatre, with its vibrant illusions and ethereal choreography, often leaves audiences spellbound. What many don't realize is the intense physical and mental dedication required behind the scenes, especially when taking a production internationally. HILT, a renowned Czech black light theatre company, knows this firsthand.

For HILT's team of actors and directors, touring the globe is far from a glamorous vacation. It’s a demanding gauntlet of long flights, rushed transports between airports, hotels, and theaters, and relentless rehearsals stretching into the late hours. Sleep becomes a precious commodity, sacrificed to the crucial task of transforming a darkened stage into a canvas of illuminated wonder. The challenge is amplified by the need to quickly build rapport and understanding with foreign production teams, bridging cultural and linguistic gaps under immense pressure.

This dedication recently culminated in a significant achievement: HILT was selected by a committee from India's prestigious National School of Drama to represent the Czech Republic at the Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2025, a renowned international theatre festival.

The festival proved to be a whirlwind of activity. On February 8th, 2025, HILT received awards at the legendary Kamani Auditorium in New Delhi. Barely enough time to celebrate, they embarked on a grueling bus journey to Jaipur, Rajasthan, to perform another show at the Rajasthan International Centre on February 10th, 2025. Following the show, an early morning flight on February 12th marked the end of their intense Indian adventure.

Directors Theodor Hoidekr and Stepanka Pencova vividly illustrate the reality of their experience. "It is really very hard work, half-day intercontinental travelling, only a few hours of sleeping... you see airport, plane, hotel, bus, stage, and in a moment you are back home in Prague from beautiful India."

The rigors of international touring are undeniable. The constant travel, jet lag, and demanding performance schedule take a heavy toll. Yet, despite the exhaustion, the passion for their craft shines through. As Hoidekr and Pencova emphasize, "But we and our actors, we love our work, sharing Czech black light theatre with the world!"

HILT's story offers a glimpse into the often-unseen dedication and sacrifice that fuels the magic of live theatre, especially when shared on an international stage. Their commitment to their art and their ability to overcome the challenges of global touring ensures that audiences worldwide can continue to be captivated by the unique beauty and artistry of Czech black light theatre. It's a testament to the power of passion and the enduring appeal of sharing art across borders.
